Sailing is perfectly complemented by fishing. It's easy, inexpensive, fun, and provides you with fresh food -- nothing to sneeze in many cruising destinations, where supermarkets are few and far between. It also gives you the thrill of catching large, beautiful fish; often, enough to share with others -- a wonderful occasion to meet other cruisers, with bragging rights going to the lucky fisherman.
If the above sounds attractive, but has set visions of fancy fishing rods costing hundreds of dollars dancing in your head, relax -- none of that is necessary. This is one of those places where the best is also the cheapest -- as long as you know what you're doing.
The Rig
Required materials:
3' bungee cord
Stainless steel (SS) shackle
Stainless key ring
100 yds. black or brown parachute cord
1-1/2" SS swivel
Large CrossLoc or Sampo snap swivel
"Cuban Yo-Yo" for storing the line, available at most fishing stores for ~$5
Setting this up is very simple: connect the key ring to one end of the bungee, and the shackle to the other, then slide the big swivel onto the key ring. Tie one end of the cord to the big swivel with a clinch knot, and attach the other end to the snap swivel the same way. That's it -- except for your terminal tackle, you're ready to hook up with some scaly, finned monsters of the deep!
Lures and leaders
Required materials:
5 - 7" plastic squids (blue/white)
5 - 7" plastic squids (pink)
3 - 7" plastic squids (pink/white)
3 - 7" plastic squids (chartreuse)
3 dozen 5/0-7/0 forged stainless hooks
2 dozen 2-3 oz. egg sinkers
25' solid stainless leader wire (#6 or heavier)
Tools:
Needle-nose pliers
Heavy diagonal cutters
Heavy canvas gloves
To an experienced fisherman, this list may seem meager and insufficient. I confess -- I've got two big Plano boxes (double-sided ones, too) full of lures that look good enough to eat, plus a gym bag full of various fishing accessories, knick-knacks, and clever gadgets, including a wind-up swimming frog that cost me eight bucks and hasn't accounted for a single fish to date. The only problem is... I don't use any of it for this kind of fishing. The above list, simple as it is, does everything necessary, and the fish don't seem to mind that none of the above lures costs more than a buck. If I'm sailing through an area that has mackerel or bonito, I might add an umbrella rig and some red and green surgical tubing to the above -- another $5 or so -- but in general, these lures take care of it all.
The basic terminal rig is just as simple as the main line: using a haywire twist, attach a hook to a 3'-long piece of leader wire, then slip a sinker onto the wire, a squid over the sinker, then loop and haywire the other end. Lock the loop into the snap swivel, and you're ready to go!
Using the rig
Attach the shackle to some strong part of the boat near the stern. Do make sure that it is strong: I've hooked a 400-lb swordfish off Puerto Rico that yanked the boat to a near-stop! Letting a large fish swim off with some piece of your boat and your entire rig is not a part of this method, so make sure that all is secure before putting that hook in the water.
Next, rig an "indicator knot" using the bungee. This is simply an overhand knot using the doubled-over bungee and tied to a stanchion or rail; just make sure that a hard pull on the line will pop it loose. Now, while sailing, just lower your lure into the water and stream out the line -- and you're fishing!
When a fish hits, grab your gloves and bring him in (you might want to heave the boat to -- a quick maneuver which will bring it to a near stop -- since pulling in a heavy fish while dragging it at 5 knots or so is quite a chore.) If you've never done this kind of hand-line fishing, you'll find that bringing in a 50-lb. fish is no problem at all: where doing that with a rod would take hours and gallons of sweat, with a hand-line, it takes about two or three minutes and very little effort. Just make sure to never, ever wrap the line around your hand: a big fish could really hurt you, and being laughed at and called "Stumpy" would be even worse than losing a chunk of the boat.
That's really all there is to catching big fish under sail; I've used this method for more than a decade now, and a 20 or 40-mile passage in reasonably productive waters almost never leaves me empty-handed. Enjoy, and be sure to share with others when you have more than you can use!
Among his other pursuits, Zonker is an avid sailor and fisherman, and successful enough that he never has to lie about the size of his fish.:)
