While this takes some caution, we can provide you with clear and concise directions on how to successfully repair and maintain a conventional or bait-casting reel. Remember, it is almost always preferable to have professional do this, but if you simply can't wait, it's perfectly acceptable to do-it-yourself. Follow these clear and simple steps to successfully repair or maintain your reel.

First, make sure that you are working on a large work area - one that is clean and well lighted. Remember that reels have a number of small parts that make them work properly so it will be critical to your success to make sure that you create yourself a complete diagram of your reel as you take it apart. You can do this with the help of a digital camera, or take a large piece of blank paper and draw the parts on the paper as you remove them.

Since most reels follow the same basic assembly, these directions should work well for most any type. The real key to success is to make sure that you are carefully documenting what the reel looks like and where all the parts fit together. Don't remove any pieces without carefully noting the proper placement. Pictures or diagrams can help guarantee your success. Don't lose track of small springs or screws that could be crucial to your reels operation.

After you prepare a proper work area you will need to assemble the tools that you will need to successfully repair or maintain your reel. These tools will help guarantee your ability to successfully perform the needed repairs or maintenance. Don't try to start without having these tools close at hand.

A pair of pliers

Philips head screwdrivers (assorted sizes)

Regular head screwdrivers (assorted sizes)

A ratchet with the appropriate sized heads

A supply of absorbent and clean rags

Reel grease and oil

A small toothbrush (or other small brush)

Follow these steps exactly to ensure that you are properly disassembling your reel for maintenance and repair. First we'll take the reel apart and clean and maintain the casing:

1. Locate the nut that is holding your reel handle in place and remove it;

2. turn the drag star counterclockwise to unscrew and set aside;

3. turn the reel so that you have the right side facing and remove the side plate (usually four screws) *use caution;

4. now that you have separated the main gear assembly, remove the spool from the reel case;

5. your reel case should now have no parts in it. At this time, carefully clean the inside of the case to remove any sand, dirt or old grease;

6. once clean, carefully grease the entire clicker mechanism that is located inside the left plate;

7. for reels with a worm gear, apply grease to the drive for the level wind; from the left side of the plate, turn the small gear to spread evenly;

8. them carefully apply small amounts of grease to all teeth;

9. carefully clean the spool using care to extract all sand, dirt and old grease;

10. apply reel oil to the end pins of the spools;

11. replace the spool inside the reel case.

The next portion of your cleaning and maintenance will involve the main drive gear assembly. Each step must be followed precisely to avoid problems.

1. If the main gear assembly is attached to a mounting plate, carefully remove the two screws that join it to the side plate;

2. carefully remove the mounting plate and gear assembly away from the side plate (if there is no mounting plate simply lift out);

3. carefully remove any dirt, sand or old grease from the gear assembly;

4. grease liberally.

The following steps involve some small parts. Be certain that you are very careful with them, and place them carefully so that they can be put back exactly where they were removed from. Diagramming this portion of the removal process could be extremely helpful in reassembling.

1. Drag Washers - the top of the main drive gear has drag washers. Remove them carefully and make sure they are placed carefully down in the order of removal. Replace each washer after carefully massaging grease into them. Excess grease should be removed with a clean rag after the washers are dry to the touch. Replace each washer in the proper order;

2. Bearings - for seized bearings, try smearing grease along the side to thoroughly coat. If this doesn't work, replace the entire bearing - attempting to take the assembly apart could result in chasing dozens of BB's around your work area;

Now it's time to start putting your reel back together using these simple steps:

1. Your spool should be inside the reel casing;

2. position the right side plate and gear assembly over the end pin;

3. line the screw holes up and press both sides together;

4. reinstall the screws through the side plate;

5. screw the star drag back on the reel;

6. mount your reel handle.

It's a good idea to test your work by making sure that all of the parts are well anchored exactly where they belong. The diagram (or digital photographs) you created along the way will help ensure that your attempt at maintaining your reel is successful.

While it's not difficult to maintain your reel yourself, it is time consuming and requires patience, fairly good eye-sight and a very steady hand. Whether you're accustomed to a conventional or bait-casting reel, these steps can help you repair or maintain your reel when you are simply not willing to wait to have it serviced professionally. Most fisherman find that an experienced service person can easily identify a problem long before it requires a major overhaul so they feel it's best to leave maintenance to the professionals.
