When spring arrives, it is time to go crappie fishing. First of all, crappie make an excellent meal. Most people would agree they are one of the best fish to eat in freshwater. If you try to avoid fried food, this is one time you may find it justified. A meal with fried crappie fillets, hush puppies and coleslaw is a staple of the southern diet. The second reason crappie fishing is so popular is that it is an excellent way to get kids interested in fishing. When you find a good area, you will catch a good number of fish from one spot. The fish are not very large but they put up a good fight.

On most lakes across the southeast, the crappie fishing will take off with the first significant warm spell of the year. With several days of bright sunshine, the water temperature will rise rapidly. Most years this will be in the middle of February to the first week of March. The fish will move shallower as the water temperature rises up until the spawn in late March or early April. The time frame depends on several factors like the water temperature, moon phase, amount of daylight, and numerous other reasons. Remember that the spawn takes place over a fairly broad time frame. All of the fish will not spawn at one time. This is just nature's way of protecting itself. Once the spawn is complete, the fish will gradually move out to deeper water. Therefore, the period between the middle of February to the middle of April is the best time to catch these delicious fish.

Now we are ready for the specifics on how to find the crappie. As the water temperature rises into the low sixties, the crappie will pull up into two to four feet of water. This is the time most people look forward to fishing for crappie. If a cold front comes through and the surface temperature drops the fish will pull out deeper. Start by looking for any brush in the shallow water. If you find a shallow dock with brush under the shady side of the dock, you have a gold mine. The crappie love the security of the shade. All kinds of small things can give a way an excellent spot. Look for minnow buckets on the docks, rod holders, floats broken off around the cables, brush sticking out of the water, and lights pointed toward the water.

Concerning tackle, be sure to use light line and small baits. The ideal line on most lakes is four-pound test. If you use heavier line, you will cut your number of bites drastically. Be sure to use a rod this is very limber. A crappie has a very delicate mouth, which gives them their nickname "paper mouth." The limber rod will help keep the hook from tearing loose form the crappie's mouth. If you are fishing with kids, bring an abundant supply of floats. The best floats to use with smaller kids are the one ones with a small piece of lead wrapped around the base of the float to improve the ability to cast the float. Try to use the smallest float possible. The basic live bait set up is to use a size 4 Eagle Claw 202ELR hook tied to the end of your four-pound test. Connect the float about 18 to 24 inches about the hook. Hook the minnow through the lips and be sure to change your minnow fairly often. If you want to use artificials, start with very small tube jigs or hair jigs. A very small jig is a 1/16 oz. and 1/32oz jig. If the water is stained, a small red and green tube jig is a tried and true winner. Every year is different so do not be afraid to try a different color combination. If the water is more on the clear side go to the more natural colors. A white jig with a little red is a good choice to start with in the clean water. So get the rods ready, the first warm weather is due any day.
