Let us start with the wrists because your swing is mainly built around appropriate wrist action. The wrists are the starters, providing the final bursts of speed and power through impact. In addition, if you cock the wrists correctly, the hands and forearms frequently are positioned properly as well, because those parts are so tangled where the swing is concerned.
Most of the players never learn how to make use of their wrists correctly and accordingly never really get their games off the ground. That is because weak wrist action makes it particularly complicated to get the club face square to the ball at impact. Hitting slices becomes all but a certainty.
I suggest this drill to help you gain a working knowledge of how your wrists, hands, and forearms should function. You can put into action these drills on a practice tee or even at home.
- This drill requires some originality, maybe even a little relocation of your living room. What you need is a guidepost. If you are at home, you can use a table, couch, or chair. If you are at a golf course or practice facility, you can make use of a golf cart. Essentially, you need something that has a straight edge at least the length of a golf club, roughly the height of your waist.
- You can employ the golf cart to practice this drill For right handed players, stand outside the cart on the driver side, with the outside of their right leg about three inches from the cart. For left handed players, stand on the passenger side, with their left leg about three inches from the cart. The same positioning applies if you are using a table, couch, chair, or other object.
- At this time, gripping a seven iron, get into the correct posture, tilting at the waist and slightly unlocking your knees. Set up so that when you grip the club, your hands are even with or a couple of inches behind the edge of the cart, table, couch, or chair. It is crucial that throughout this drill you keep your hands in line with your belt buckle.
- Even though the wrists and forearms rotate, your upper arms and shoulders should remain virtually stationary. The first stage of the drill demonstrates what comprises a proper wrist cock. Keeping the hands in front of your belt buckle, and the toe end of the club pointed away from you, gradually raise the club head toward your nose. Notice that your wrists work like hinges, allowing you to raise and lower the club using only the hands, wrists, and lower arms. Raise and lower the club as many times as it takes to get a feel for cocking and releasing your wrists.
- These are some check points for telling whether your wrists, hands, and forearms are located and functioning correctly. For right handed players, as you draw the club back, keeping the hands in line with your belt buckle, your forearms should rotate to the right while your wrists cock up. The back of your left hand and the club face should match, both pointing away from your body. Additionally, your arms should maintain their distance from your body.
- Finally, you should be able to draw an imaginary line from the back of your left hand over the top of the ball, cornering to the ground. The toe end of the club should point straight up toward the sky. The club shaft should be parallel with your feet, hips, knees, and target line.
- If you golf left handed, here are the pointers to watch for: As you draw the club back, keeping your hands in line with your belt buckle, your forearms should rotate to the left while your wrists cock up. The back of your right hand and the club face need to match, pointing away from the body. The toe end of the club should point straight up toward the sky.
Remember, the game of golf is not a one day event, as it takes lots of practice to make it work. Good luck in your game!
