Nor Abs

The four steps to killing your loose belly are a balance of exercise and diet. However this does not mean you need to be doing endless, boring stomach crunches nor does it mean that another fad diet is your route to losing stomach fat. A loose belly can be radically firmed with discipline and focus on these four straight-forward steps.

Step One - take some cardiovascular exercise

Cycling, swimming or running all require your muscles to burn fatty acids and call upon your glycogen reserves. A mix of cardiovascular exercise with floor-work will help you melt your loose belly and stop you from becoming bored. Remember that because we all lose fat in different places first, you will need to be patient with your exercise regime. Do not expect that just a few days of exercise will fully tone your stomach. Keep with your regime over the coming weeks and you will not regret it.

In terms of time commitment you should ensure that you undertake a minimum of 20 minutes of cardio exercise at least three times a week - this is a minimum. Most trainers whose clients have weight loss as their primary goal recommend 30 minutes of cardio activity at least five days a week.

Keep in mind the range of activities that count as cardio exercise - there is no need to get bored with one type of exercise. When summer comes by why not get your bike our and leave the spinners in the gym for winter! Remember to incorporate floor exercises into your exercise regime for maximum stomach fat burning effect.

Step Two - Floor exercises (but NOT endless stomach crunches!)

Most people think that to lose their loose belly they should be doing stomach crunches every day! Wrong! Like any other muscle, abs should be given a chance to rest and recover.

Sure, floor work is an important part of firming a loose stomach but it is not actually beneficial to perform endless crunches and waste time with fancy stomach firming equipment to be used on the floor. In fact a mix of floor-based abs-focussed exercise mixed with exercises that do not focus exclusively on abs produce the best results.

Do Not Fall For a Fad Diet!

A healthy diet places an emphasis on fruit, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat (or fat free milk), lean meats and fish and beans and is low in trans fats, saturated fats, cholesterol, added salt and added sugar.

Most importantly a healthy diet does not exclude any one food group. Our bodies can only function properly with a balanced diet - and your diet therefore needs to include carbohydrates and fats. However - be sure that you are consuming the right kind and quantity of fat and keep your carbohydrate intake in line with your body's needs.

Step Three - get your carbohydrate intake right

Try to keep your carbohydrate intake to no more than 65% of your caloric intake.

Diets that cut out carbohydrates are starving your body and your brain of essential fuel. Your brain and body require the right amount of carbohydrates to function adequately.

Your body needs the glucose and glycogen directly supplied by carbohydrates.

Wondering why your friends on lo-carb diets are losing weight? By cutting our carbs they are not actually losing fat but are losing weight through water loss (since water molecules associate with carbohydrate molecules). Lo-carb diets are not a balanced solution to losing your loose belly and a lo-carb diet is starving your body and brain of the nutrition it needs to work properly.

Try and keep to brown rice and whole wheat pasta for your carbohydrates source and minimise your white foods (rice and pasta) intake.

Step four - get your fat intake right

Do you know how much fat is in your diet? If not, why not? While some fat is essential to a healthy diet, getting a grip on your fat intake is a crucial ingredient in tackling your loose belly. Try and aim to be taking in no more than 30% of your caloric intake from "good fat" sources. Part of your good fat sources (around one third) could include Omega 3 and 6 sources such as sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds oil-rich fish. It is important to work on cutting out trans fats (often found in fast food and many ready-meals) which are not essential to a healthy body and are commonly referred to as "bad fats".
