If you've always wanted to try your hand at salmon fishing in BC, you may want to know a few basics about the types of salmon populating our local BC waters.

First of all there are five different species of salmon here in BC; Sockeye, Coho, Chinook also known as Spring salmon or Atlantic salmon, Chum and Pink salmon.

Atlantic Salmon are found in the northern Atlantic Ocean and in rivers that flow into the North Atlantic and (due to human introduction) the North Pacific. Most of us here in BC call them Springs.

Maybe you've already heard, British Columbia is home to some of the best salmon fishing in the world!

Sport fishermen find these a popular fish due to the potential size and the fight as well as the rich, tasty meat.

Located along BC's coastline are many heavily populated feeding grounds used year-round by Chinook and Coho salmon, which in turn provide awesome salmon fishing. Several million Pacific salmon appear along this coastline each year as well, most on spawning migrations to their rivers where they were born in BC.

Salmon have always been vital to life in the Pacific Northwest and a part of our heritage in Canada.

Whenever sport fishing buffs get together to discuss fishing, British Columbia and salmon are synonymous - and for good reason!

These powerful and exciting sport fish range in size from 3 to over 90 pounds! Now that you know where to come to find world class salmon fishing, all that you will need now is some gear you will need to land these incredible fish.

It's important to use the right gear when you are salmon fishing in BC and I personally tend to be on the high side of these numbers with regards to rod length and line strength because you never know when you'll hook into a monster salmon!

If you are fly fishing for salmon in freshwater, you will need a 12 to 16 foot graphite or fiberglass rod, as well as a sturdy fly reel and a fly line. For bait fishing or spinning, use at least a 10 foot spinning rod and a baitcaster reel with 15 to 20 pound-test fluorocarbon line.

If you are fishing for Chinook or Coho salmon, you will need a boat or trolling rod that has a star-drag baitcaster reel equipped with 20 to 45 pound-test line. Chinook and Coho are the largest and most sought after Pacific salmon.

Atlantic salmon being the most fished freshwater salmon, most anglers fly fish for these species, but they can also be caught on spoons, plugs and natural baits. A lot of us see results with the tried and tested good old "CROC" lure.

Pacific salmon are usually fished by trolling just offshore and in estuaries. They can also be caught with fly fishing equipment and spinning (landlocked varieties) when they move up rivers and streams to spawn.
