Pelagic Zone $98.77 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Any water in the sea that is not close to the bottom or near to the shore is in the pelagic zone. The word pelagic comes from the Greek or pelagos, which means open sea. The pelagic zone can be thought of in terms of an imaginary cylinder or water column that goes from the surface of the sea almost to the bottom, as shown in the diagram on the left. Conditions change deeper down the water column; the pressure increases, the temperature drops and there is less light. Depending on the depth, scientists further subdivide the water column, rather like the Earths atmosphere is divided into different layers. Pelagic Fish $68.51 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Pelagic fish live in the water column of coastal, ocean and lake waters, but not on the bottom of the sea or the lake. They can be contrasted with demersal fish, which do live on or near the bottom, and reef fish which are associated with coral reefs. The marine pelagic environment is the largest aquatic habitat on earth, occupying 1,370 million cubic kilometres (330 million cubic miles), and is the habitat for 11 percent of known fish species. The oceans have a mean depth of 4000 meters. About 98 percent of the total water volume is below 100 meters, and 75 percent is below 1000 metres. Climate Change and Small Pelagic Fish (Hardcover) $436.89 This book details the effects of climate variability on small pelagic fish and their ecosystems and fisheries. Particularly abundant in coastal upwelling regions off the west coasts of the Americas and Africa, off Japan, and in the NE Atlantic, the stocks of these fish fluctuate greatly over the timescale of decades, with large ecological and economic effects. This book describes the nature and cause of these fluctuations, and their consequences. It outlines results from paleo-oceanographic studies, showing that similar fluctuations have also occurred over the past two millennia. The potential effects of future climate change, both natural and anthropogenic, on stocks and fisheries, are considered. The book concludes by recommending the continued international study and assessment of small pelagic fish in order to best inform management and policy under a changing climate. It is written for research scientists, academics, and policy makers in fisheries, oceanography, and climate change. |
