If you've ever seen people fly fishing with spinning rods and reels and wondered how do they do it, then you be sure to read this article. Specifically, we're going to discuss necessary tackle, how to cast and whether it's possible or not to cast without a bubble. After reading this article you should be able to decide if spin fishing flies is something you want to try.

While it is completely possible to spin fish flies with regular spinning rods and reels it does require a few pieces of necessary tackle. You'll need a casting bubble, a working and properly sized swivel, and an appropriate length of leader material. Finding the right casting bubble is probably the most difficult part of setting up your fly a bubble rig. There are several types of casting bubbles to choose from, the best type to use will depend on the type of fishing you are doing and the state of your vision.

Casting the fly and bubble rig is a little tricky, especially if your leader is on the longer end. A length of leader longer than the length of your rod can be very unruly for beginners who are spin fishing flies. The easiest and best way to cast a fly and bubble rig is off to the side, with a sidearm casting motion. If you are just beginning to study spin fishing flies, I would recommend keeping your leader in the 4 foot to 5 foot range. When you become more experience, then you can experiment with longer leaders (sometimes into the 12 foot range for the deeper presentations.)

Many times people want to know if it's possible start spin fishing flies, without using a casting bubble. The answer is yes, it is possible to fish a fly with spinning equipment without a bubble. But, it's not possible to cast it any appreciable distance. What this means, is that in an emergency, you could pay out your fly and line into a river, for instance, and let the water pull your line out. However, this is not casting and would probably get old pretty fast. You are much better off using a casting bubble of some sort.

To start spin fishing flies you only need a few pieces of additional equipment in addition to the spinning rod and reel you already have, but to get to the point where you're actually catching fish on a regular basis is going to require lots of practice. However, with some more in-depth training in the technique you could become an expert at spin fishing flies in less than a weekend.

Gobioides broussonetti Dragon Fish $5.99 Dragon Fish, or Violet Gobies, are odd fish that are native to coastal brackish marine estuaries of the western Atlantic coast from the Carolinas to Brazil. In captivity, they seem to thrive the best in brackish water. They are characterized by a long, silver-violet eel-like body, with dorsal and ventral fins that extend all the way to the tail. They have tiny eyes and a large mouth in which their sharp teeth can be clearly seen. Despite their predatory appearance, Dragon Fish are not big predators. They have poor eyesight, and do little hunting. Dragon Fish often feed by scooping mouthfuls of sand or mud, swallowing edible items, and spitting out the rest. Their natural diet consists mainly of diatoms, worms, and small crustaceans. In the aquarium, they will accept live and frozen blackworms, bloodworms, brine shrimp, ghost shrimp, krill, as well as sinking pellets and occasionally, tiny guppies. Due to their poor eyesight, Dragon Fish are often slow to find food, and do not get enough to eat before other fish consume all the food. Be sure that your Dragon Fish gets plenty to eat, or it may starve to death. Dragon Fish should be kept singly unless a large group can be kept in a tank of about 100 gallons or more. In small tanks and small groups, one larger Dragon Fish will dominate the others and some may be bullied or not get enough food. Dragon Fish can be kept with most peaceful fish that are too large to swallow.

They are best kept in a species tank or with medium to large, hardy community species. They are also notorious jumpers, so be sure you have a tight-fitting lid!

Its body is gray to black with a slender forked tail. The Elephant Nose is a nocturnal fish, hunting and feeding mostly at night. It is important to provide smooth-sided gravel or fine sand so that it does not injure itself when looking for food in this way. Elephant Noses will accept most small live foods, but can usually be trained to eat frozen foods and sometimes, sinking pellets. The Elephant Nose is able to produce a weak electric discharge that it uses in courtship and in locating prey. This fish is relatively peaceful toward other fish of similar size, but is territorial and aggressive with its own kind. For this reason they are best kept one per tank unless the aquarium is very large, about 200 gallons or more. Provide a heavily planted tank with soft, acidic water and subdued lighting. This provides natural hiding places and will help minimize stress. Elephant noses are sensitive fish, and are easily stressed by poor water quality. Frequent water changes are a must to keep this fish healthy. Use caution if it becomes necessary to add medications or other harsh chemicals to the tank as many of these products are harmful or fatal to the elephant nose. These fish are surface predators, and feed primarily on insects, larvae and other small items that fall into the water.
