Knowledge Is No More Slanted by Faith Than Wisdom Is Slanted By Intelligence

We live in a society in which the unbeliever equates wisdom to secular reasoning, knowledge to subjective truths, and faith to religion without knowledge, wisdom, or understanding. This contradictory concept is the result of thoughtless, faulty, and foolish reasoning. The very belief that there is a difference between working knowledge and the Christian faith is, in itself, a statement of personal faith.

 

One cannot exist and function in a world that is based upon knowledge alone. Faith is an eminent component of life, as we know it. Moment by moment, every decision that you make is based upon your faith in something.

 

You may say that you disagree. You may contend that knowledge is the only certain truth in life. This then, is your faith in process, and it is not based upon reason, wisdom, or even common sense; it is based upon your hopes that a certain and, in your mind, reasonability predictable outcome will come to pass.

 

Scripture says: "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen," (Hebrews 11:1).

 

Because unbelievers are not fully versed in bible knowledge, they conclude that this means that Christians must walk without any evidence of God's goodness, God's faithfulness, and God personal intervening into this physical world. Thus thru ignorance, a lack of knowledge, a lack of wisdom, and a lack of understanding, they do not comprehend the essence of true Christian faith.

 

Knowledge Without Faith Cannot Function

 

At night, before you lie down to sleep, you may choose to set an alarm clock so that you will awaken in the morning, and on time. You do this by reason of past experience. Alarm clocks normally function as planned. Life, for you, has thus far continued into each following morning. The average person awakes with ears that hear, eyes that see, and legs that move. On which night do you sleep beneath a promise that tomorrow will bring the same hearing, the same vision, and the same ability to move?

 

Your knowledge of events is limited to the past, and to the current moment. Though it may have functioned without error for twenty years, you have no certain knowledge concerning the future dependability of your alarm clock. Even more important, you have no guarantee that your life will not end immediately or soon thereabout. Thus you chose, by faith alone, to trust in your alarm clock and to live as though a future is promised.

 

Let us examine the life requirements for faith concerning other objects and functions of knowledge, so called:

 

By faith you trust that an airplane pilot is not insane, deathly sick, or merely determined to cause injury to his passengers.

By faith you wait until a given time before beginning your journey to an important, life-changing event.

By faith you hope that the pill from an unknown druggist contains your prescription rather than that of another.

By faith in an unknown and unseen construction crew, you ride the rails of a thrill-packed roller coaster.

By faith you trust that an illicit sexual partner carries not the death of aids.

By faith you trust that wife and child will remain safe while you leave them behind to go to work or to pleasure.

By faith you trust that the oncoming driver will remain in his lane of travel.

By faith you lay up treasures for supposed future years of life and abundance.

By faith you chose to believe that God's word is void.

 

As a fool, you may proclaim that you have certain knowledgeable reports. You may say that the odds are in my favor. You may hope that your family will never suffer great trial and tribulation, but the evidence of history speaks against you. You may believe that your retirement fund will remain stable, but even now the economy strips you of that assumed certainty. The average U.S. daily death rate is 6500 people. By faith, you live and function as though you will be one of those who get to see tomorrow's sun.

 

Perhaps you believe that math never fails. This too begets faith in an uncertain knowledge. Example: One plus one equals two, unless of course the one plus one involves a man and a woman seeking to produce a child in which case the two may produce zero or the two may produce many more than two.

"That's not the same," you argue. You are slanting the understanding of math. Ok, let us examine the statement that one plus zero equals one. When speaking of a seed placed within the ground, the math again fails, for one seed may produce much fruit. So we see that math when applied to more than mere calculations on paper does not hold absolute sway over the physics of the universe.

 

Is this argument concerning math subjected to my purposes. Certainly it is, for all science, logic, and knowledge is slanted according to the faith, or lack thereof, of the speaker. Only eternal things exist without regard to our personal applications.

 

Christian Faith and Wisdom is Based Upon Knowledge

 

As you, by a faith that is related to past experiences, ascertain that hell-fire will not fall upon your head from a clear sky, so too does the Christian by a faith related to past experiences ascertain that Jesus Christ is the one true and living God. You cannot understand this because you have never touched nor been comforted by the living God. You have never heard him speak nor felt the wonder of his glory within your soul. You have never seen him answer your prayers in a manner that disassembles the natural laws of the universe, indeed, the very laws that he created. Your knowledge is subjective to a false premise, and your faith is focused upon the wrong person, place, or thing.

 

Scripture confirms that knowledge and wisdom come from God, not men. It is written:

 

"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction," and "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding," (Prov. 1:7; 9:10).

 

Perhaps you do not believe that Christians hear the voice of God. Perhaps you believe that we slant the source of knowledge based upon an unseen person. This is an example of your faulty faith. The Holy Scriptures, from beginning to end, records a God who joys in speaking directly to his people. Abraham, Moses, prophets and kings, all proclaim to have heard the voice of a living God.

 

You cannot hear that voice for your father is Satan, and you are of the world. You deny truth. You deny sure knowledge. You create a false understanding. And you think yourself wise. Such error in comprehension does not, in any manner, nullify the founded-upon-experience, knowledge of the true children of God.

 

Though our faith in eternal matters is built upon "the substances of things hoped for", our daily faith in a spiritual application of physical matters is build upon the concrete presence of a living God who cares for and communicates with his people. Just as a man feels the invisible wind, we have known the physical touch of an invisible Holy Spirit. Just as a physical voice resounds through the electronics of a telephone, so too does a spiritual voice leap within the redeemed heart of God's children. Just as there is a physical death, there is also a second death to unbelievers; so too is there an eternal life to those who confess their sin, believe upon the name of Jesus Christ, and accept him as Lord above all.

 

True Knowledge in Christ

 

Oh you that are so blind, why do you not seek a living knowledge, why is wisdom so far from your foolish lips? It is not a matter of whether you live by faith, nor that you do not live by faith, for by faith we all must live. It is, rather, a matter of the object of your faith. Without faith in Jesus Christ, your life is but vanity upon vanity. You will live without understanding; you will die into an eternal life in hell fire and damnation.

 

"And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God," (John 3:14-18).
