Saltwater Surf fishing is an exciting sport. If you are new to surf fishing, knowing what types of surfing rigs to use is an important factor to your success. The fish finder rig and the fireball rig are two types of rigs that are most commonly used by surfcasters.

The fish finder rig is a versatile rig. It has a one hook set up that can be used in many types of fishing conditions. It can be used to fish from the beach, by the points and bays or piers. It is designed to let the hook move freely along the line with the surf. The sinker acts as an anchor to keep the line close to the bottom. The weight of the sinker will depends on the conditions of the surf, light surf will require light sinker such as egg sinkers which can be slide through the line. Heavier surf requires the pyramid shape sinker. The sinker is attached to a swivel with a plastic sleeve. The line is thread through the sleeve to allow the sinker to move along the line. This technique lets the fish to strike the bait without feeling the weight of the sinker.

The ideal hook to use for this type of rig is the circle hook. The size of the hook will depends on the type of bait you are using. Circle hooks let the fish to take the bait first and swim away before hooking the fish. The best surf fishing baits to use for fish finder rigs are shrimp, sand crabs and blood worms. Use a strong leader with length between 18 inches to 25 inches long to tie your hook with, attach a swivel to the other end of the leader for the main line.

The fireball rig is another type of bottom rig that is popular for surf fishing. The rig is not as easy to make as the fish finder rig. But you can buy it pre-assembled at the fishing shop. The rig uses two-hook set up with two foam balls attached to the front of the hooks. This feature is intended to keep the scavenging crabs from eating your bait before the fish do. On cloudy days or when the water is murky, the bright color foam balls can be effective in attracting fish.

Fireball rigs use snelled hooks as the standard set up, the size will varies according to the species of fish and baits you are targeting. It is best to also use a short leader with your hooks to avoid the chance of your line breaking from fish with sharp set of teeth such as the Spanish mackerel. The rig uses the pyramid shape sinker as part of the set up, it is attached to a swivel and tied to the main line.
